    Refinish, don't replace

Refurbishment and refinishing works help extend the lifespan of existing Durat surfaces, improving the overall appearance and reducing the need for premature replacement across the workplace tea points and support spaces. Refinishing over 60m2, one metric tonne of material, which if the surfaces were replaced rather than refinished it would have unnecessarily sent material with 4,042 CO2 embodied carbon to recycling.

Following recommendations identified in year one, rubber matting has noticeably reduced surface wear and scratching from daily use. While signs of abrasion remain in high-traffic areas, the changes have helped improve the long-term performance of the worktops and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements.

The project also identified opportunities for preventative maintenance and future-proofing. Light refinishing addressed visible scuffing around high-use areas such as bins and plug sockets, while structural movement at one worktop joint highlighted the importance of additional support detailing to prevent further bowing over time.

Rather than replacing surfaces unnecessarily, the project focused on restoration, maintenance and targeted intervention, retaining material value, reducing waste and preserving embodied carbon already invested within the fit-out. Even lower-traffic areas previously considered out of scope were reviewed as part of a broader strategy to maintain consistency, longevity and overall workplace quality.
